I am [writing or calling] to ask you to stop the Statewide Pest Prevention Programmatic Environmental Impact Report (Pest PEIR) and to use the PEIR funding to modernize the state’s approach to invasive species and pests to make statewide pest programs less toxic, more effective, less costly and less burdensome to our farmers.
The Pest PEIR, as the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has described it, will establish, for the long term, the outdated, chemical-intensive pest management approach the state now uses. This approach has not changed for decades; it brought us aerial spraying for the Medfly 30 years ago and aerial spraying for the light brown apple moth (LBAM) 3 years ago.
If it is approved, the Pest PEIR will take away the public’s ability to oppose pesticide spraying in our communities and on our food. It impacts the entire state of California for years into the future.
Please support a smarter and safer approach to pest management for our state and stop spending our tax dollars on the preparation of the Pest PEIR.
